Since Japan Industrial Partners acquired Olympus in 2021, establishing OM Digital Solutions and rebranding their cameras as OM System, updates have been rolled out for almost every Olympus camera series, with one notable exception: the PEN-F / PEN E-P7 range of digital rangefinders.

The Olympus PEN-F, admired for its stunning vintage aesthetic, has been hailed by some as the epitome of camera design. For years, Olympus aficionados have eagerly awaited a successor to this cherished series, and their anticipation may soon be realized.

A recent teaser video from OM System strongly suggests the imminent arrival of the PEN-F's long-awaited successor, with a launch date set for September 9. The video emphasizes the immersive experience of using a built-in "rangefinder" style viewfinder, a hallmark of the PEN series, and offers glimpses of the camera's form factor, including intricate details of its top plate. This new device could either be the direct heir to the beloved Olympus PEN-F, which previously inspired the design of the impressive OM-3, or a fresh take on the more affordable Olympus PEN EP-7. Regardless, the prospect of a new rangefinder-style camera has sparked considerable excitement among the Olympus fan base, as evidenced by enthusiastic comments like "Let's go!" from viewers of the YouTube teaser.

Considering the significant time elapsed since the introduction of the original Olympus models—the Pen-F is now a decade old, and the Pen EP-7 five years—this new camera is expected to incorporate several enhancements. Potential upgrades include a faster stacked sensor, an improved phase-detection autofocus system, and advanced computational photography capabilities. All details will be unveiled on September 9, and enthusiasts can tune into the live event on the OM System website, which is promoting a five-day program of discussions centered around the new camera.
