After an extended period immersed in the Samsung One UI ecosystem, a user embarked on a new journey with a Google Pixel device. This transition brought to light several distinct features from Samsung's interface that are either missing or not as seamlessly integrated into the Pixel experience. These include the advanced functionalities of Samsung's Clock application, the extensive customization offered by Good Lock, the automated actions provided by Modes and Routines, and innovative multitasking tools such as Widget Stacks, the Now Bar, Edge Panels, and Pop-up Windows. While the Pixel offers its own set of advantages, these specific elements of One UI have proven to be significant omissions for the long-time Samsung user, highlighting the unique strengths of each Android iteration.
The journey from a Samsung Galaxy, including models like the S10 Plus and various Ultra series from S20 to S24, to a Pixel 10 Pro marks a significant shift for the author, who spent six years deeply accustomed to One UI. This change, while offering new perspectives, also underlined the absence of certain beloved functionalities. Among the most unexpected misses was Samsung's native Clock application. One UI 7 introduced an innovative alarm grouping feature, akin to folder organization on a home screen. This allowed users to consolidate multiple alarms and activate or deactivate them with a single tap, a significant time-saver compared to individually managing alarms. This organizational efficiency is particularly missed when encountering Google's Material 3 Expressive redesign of its clock app, which the author describes as feeling less intuitive and more cluttered.
Good Lock stands out as another deeply missed suite of tools. This collection of modules empowers users with profound customization capabilities over their device's appearance and behavior. For instance, Theme Park facilitates personalized app icons, enabling users to either design their own or integrate icon packs from the Play Store, with these custom icons being universally applied across the system. Sound Assistant, another Good Lock module, provides granular control over audio settings. A particularly cherished function was the ability to control media playback using volume keys while the screen was off, offering convenience when direct interaction with the screen was impractical, such as when lying down. Beyond these, One Hand Operation+ was a transformative tool, allowing advanced navigation gestures from the screen's edges, such as swiping diagonally for specific actions like accessing the overview screen or returning home. This feature greatly enhanced ergonomic single-handed use, especially on larger devices, by minimizing the need for thumb stretching.
Samsung's Modes and Routines application offers extensive automation possibilities, rivaling Apple's Siri Shortcuts. This powerful tool allows users to define triggers and actions across their entire Samsung ecosystem, including wearables like Galaxy Buds and smartwatches. A prime example is the ability to automatically activate noise cancellation and switch equalizer presets on Galaxy Buds when a game is launched and a Bluetooth controller is connected. The author specifically relied on two custom routines: one for managing migraines, manually activated to dim the display, engage a blue light filter, and mute all sounds, providing immediate relief from sensory overload. The second routine addressed the challenge of not missing crucial phone appointments due to keeping the phone silent. By linking a specific alarm to a routine, the phone would automatically boost ringer and notification volumes before scheduled calls, ensuring important communications were never overlooked.
Widget stacks represent another area where Samsung's One UI provided a superior user experience. This feature enables users to overlay widgets of the same dimensions, allowing them to scroll through different widgets in the same screen space. This innovative approach helps maintain a clean and organized home screen while still providing access to a multitude of information. The author, for example, configured stacks for calendar and task lists, battery status and news feeds, and clock and weather. The Pixel's widget implementation, in contrast, is perceived as lacking both in design and functionality, particularly the absence of a stacking feature, which the author believes Google should adopt from iOS, just as Samsung did.
The Now Bar, Samsung's take on Android 16's Live Updates, also demonstrated a significant advantage. This feature provides real-time information, such as navigation directions or sports scores, directly in the notification area. What was particularly frustrating for the author was that Samsung devices running One UI 7 (based on Android 15) successfully integrated Google's own apps, like Google Maps, into the Now Bar months before Pixel devices on Android 16 could achieve the same. Furthermore, the disappointing revelation that media controls would not be supported on Pixel's Live Updates, despite working flawlessly on Samsung's Now Bar, was a major letdown for the author, who frequently used this functionality.
Finally, Edge Panels and Pop-up Windows round out the list of coveted One UI features. Edge Panels, with their pull-out tabs offering quick access to favorite apps, tools (like a compass or tally counter), and information, significantly enhance multitasking efficiency. While other Android devices attempt to emulate this, Samsung's integrated solution in One UI is noted for its unparalleled smoothness. Pop-up Windows, allowing applications to behave like desktop windows with resize, minimize, and drag functionalities, are crucial for seamless multitasking. The author frequently used them for chat applications, enabling quick replies without interrupting other activities like watching videos. While Pixel offers Chat Bubbles, they are described as a less refined and more restrictive alternative, lacking the universal application compatibility and fluid interaction of Samsung's pop-up windows.
Ultimately, while these features are deeply missed, the author does not regret the move to a Pixel phone. Every device platform carries its unique set of advantages and disadvantages. Currently, the benefits offered by the Pixel outweigh the absence of One UI's advanced functionalities. Nevertheless, there's a strong desire for Google to incorporate some of these highly appreciated features into its Android interface in the future, bridging the gap in user experience and offering a more comprehensive and customizable mobile environment.
